THE AMERICAN DRAEM
Despite all the dangeres, the hardships, all the disappointments, millions of people continued to travel to America all through the nineteenth centry and well into the twentieth century. Why?Some were fleeinh from oppression.Others were escaping from famine. But most of them came with a draem-a dream of a better life for themselvesand especially for ther children.
Life migt be safer and more secure in the "oldcountry"but it was almost impossible for a person to change his or her social status. For instance,a nineteenth-centry coal miner in the"old country" could expect to remain a coal miner and see his children and children's children follow him into the mines. In America, however, where there was no such rigid social order, anything seemed possible.Pinniless immigrants stepping ashore could hope that they or their children might somday bi rich and famous. And this hope, this possibility that anyone can succed in our system,is often called"the American D ream".
Serveral" rag-to-riches" success stories in the ninetheenth centry supported this concept of"the American Dream".Perhaps the most famous of such stories was that of Andrew Carnegie(1835-1919)who wasbrought to America as a "bobbin boy" in a cotton mill at the age of thirteen.Through hard work, study, a shrewd business sense and a bit of luck, Carnegie went on to become one of the richest men in America by 1990.And in the process,he made the U.S.steel industry the eny of the world.
Of course very few people dreamed of success like that of Carnegie. However,a great many American and people stuggling to reach Amrica believed that if they tried hard enough life would be better for them and for their children. But it didn't always work out like that .Millions of people ended up living inovererowded city slums. And no matter how hard they tried, most of them could not escape from erippling pocerty. For them, the"AmericanDrem"is a nightmare.
That drem, however, depended on the continuing increase of national affluence. But now ,such economic growth has definitely slowed down.We are faced with soaring enegy costs, water shortages, various environmental concerns, and increasing comption from foreign manufacturers.Andthis has led to high inflation and unemployment. It has recently been estimated by the U.S.Dept.This has promted a number of writers to state that"the great age of American affluence"is over.
Many historians view the "theAmerican Dream" as the ability of individuals to change themselves and change society.A british author, Rrank Thistlethwaite, calls America the "mobile society."He explains that all Americans are descended from people who were uprooted. Our ancestors by choice or by force,as in the case of blacks, indentured servants and native Americans, broke withe the past and started anew. And,perhaps,it is the ability to adjust,to change,to start anew that is the substance of the"American Dream."
